Evergreen Primary School is a primary special school with sites in Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe. Our Bishop Auckland site currently caters for 202 pupils, and our Newton Aycliffe site, which opened in September 2026, caters for a further 48 pupils aged 2–11.
Our pupils have severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties, complex learning difficulties, and some also have autism. Pupils may also have additional medical, physical and sensory regulation needs, as well as complex communication and language needs. All pupils at Evergreen Primary School have an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan.
At Evergreen, we recognise that every child is unique. We have developed our own carefully adapted curriculum pathways to ensure that learning is personalised to meet the needs, strengths, interests and starting points of every pupil. Our curriculum is engaging, meaningful and ambitious, providing opportunities for pupils to develop their knowledge, skills, communication, independence and confidence in ways that are relevant to them.
We place a high value on the expertise of our staff and are committed to developing a highly skilled specialist workforce. We prioritise specialist continuing professional development (CPD), equipping our staff with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to meet the complex and diverse needs of our pupils and provide high-quality learning and support across both sites.
Both of our sites provide specialist, inclusive learning environments that have been designed and developed to meet the diverse needs of our pupils.
Our Bishop Auckland site offers excellent specialist facilities, including a hydrotherapy pool, sensory rooms and a soft play room. The site also has access to large outdoor areas, including climbing and play equipment, providing pupils with opportunities to develop their physical skills, independence and confidence through active learning and play.
Our Newton Aycliffe site opened in September 2026 following the careful adaptation and development of an existing school building to create a specialist learning environment tailored to the needs of our pupils. The site includes purpose-designed sensory regulation areas, which are accessible from all classrooms and enable pupils to access support within their learning environment when they need it. Each classroom also has access to enclosed outdoor courtyards, extending the learning and play space and providing safe, accessible opportunities for pupils to learn and explore outdoors.
The Newton Aycliffe site also benefits from large outdoor areas with climbing and play equipment. Pupils have access to hydrotherapy at the local PCP Centre, as well as opportunities to use specialist community facilities such as the Tim Lamb Centre. These wider community opportunities complement the specialist provision available within school and enable pupils to develop their independence, social skills and confidence in a range of environments.
Across both sites, we provide a rich and varied learning environment where pupils can access specialist facilities, therapeutic opportunities, outdoor learning and play, and experiences that support their individual development and wellbeing.
